4 Ways A Concrete Wall Can Deteriorate

Concrete is one of the most popular materials out there. It’s also known to be one of the most reliable and durable construction materials in the world.

Just like most materials, however, concrete also eventually deteriorates. That’s why it’s essential to identify any defects on time and plan appropriate strategies to overcome these issues. Let’s take a look at some of the leading causes for a deteriorating concrete wall.

Freezing and Thawing

For areas with a cold climate, the most factor that contributes to deterioration is freezing and thawing. This takes place when concrete is highly saturated with water. The walls are filled with water that starts affecting the concrete in fundamental ways. This causes micro-cracks to develop, which become larger and more apparent if ignored over time. Thus, the issue must be addressed as soon as possible to prevent more extensive damage to the wall and the foundation.

Carbonation

Calcium carbonate is a mixture of carbon dioxide and calcium hydroxide. The carbonation of concrete starts from the outer surface and slowly moves inwards. Carbonation is the main reason behind the decrease in alkalinity, which is concerning because alkalinity protects concrete from corrosion.

Erosion

Erosion, closely related to corrosion, is the mechanical damage of concrete; this has long term effects on its structure. This mostly takes place in marine concrete. The waves of water hitting the concrete walls lead to deterioration over time. The gravel, sand, and crystalized salt carried by the waves severely impact concrete, which leads to severe damage.

Sulfate attack

Sulfate consists of three main components: soluble sulfate, tricalcium aluminate and moisture. These are the main elements that lead to the deterioration of concrete. Due to high moisture levels, the concrete expands, weakening it and leading to cracks. This process usually takes over three years but if unnoticed, it can be a costly repair. So make sure to control the moisture levels in your home or workplace.
