How to Recognize Signs of Water Damage to Your Foundation?

Age-old wisdom tells us that “you can’t build a great building on a weak foundation,” and true enough, foundation damage can lead to sudden collapsing of structures. Studies show that 55% of homeowners in the U.S., live in homes with wet basements, and 77% of tenants were unaware of the water damage in their basements. Water damage, if left unaddressed, can cause irreversible damage to your residential and commercial property.

Here are a few ways you can identify signs of water damage:

Cracked Walls

Cracks are the most evident sign of water damage in your building. While hairline cracks are expected due to weather exposure, horizontal or stair-step cracks in blocked wall areas are the ones to look out for. These occur due to excess water pressure or inadequate draining. Pay attention to your window seals and door pans; these areas gather water, leading to further damage. This is why it’s crucial to seal all your windows and doors to prevent any moisture leaks. Consult a water damage restoration company to help determine the intensity of the issue and repair it accordingly.

Increased Water Bills

If you notice a sudden increase in your water bills, often this could be due to a leak. What this could also indicate are higher chances of water damage somewhere around your property.

Chipping Paint

Although paint may have certain lifespan and can chip or peel off overtime; it’s important to note that this is also the first sign of water damage. If you notice any chipped paint, check if the cement under the paint is flaking or spalling. If water damage is the reason, you’ll even see white salt deposits, also known as efflorescence, on the foundation. Both of these symptoms are a sign of water damage. Call a plumber immediately to assess your space; since these are early signs of water damage, chances are that the repair can be a quick and easy one.

Mold

Mold growth is another major sign of water damage as it thrives in damp or wet environments. If you notice mold growing in the corner of the walls or on the ceiling, look for signs of water leakage and call in a plumber right away.

Musty Smells

If you notice an odor that resembles damp newspaper or cardboard, this is most probably due to water damage. The smell is typically most strong closer to the site damage. If you experience an unusual odor, look for other signs of water damage like mold or stains.
