What’s the Right Way to Install Brick Veneer on a Drywall?

People confuse a brick veneer as a plastic product. However, that’s not the case. Brick veneer is made of concrete. It’s thinner and lighter than brick, but it comes in a range of colors. While installing brick veneer isn’t difficult, it sure can test your patience. Let’s take a look at how you can install brick veneer on drywall.

Supplies Required

  • Veneer pieces

  • Masonry towel

  • Pencil

  • Chalk Line

  • Tape Measure

  • Wet saw

  • Traps

  • Stiff-bristled brush

Unless you’re looking for a formal look, we recommend that you go for different sized veneer pieces to make it look like a brick wall. You can also use a wet saw to cut the veneer pieces as per your preference.

Prepping the Wall

It’s preferred that you install brick veneer on a leveled wall, but you can also apply it on Durock (a cement board). Even if your wall isn’t even, you can make it look even with veneer.

Begin with measuring two vertical and two horizontal points on the wall and mark its centre. After that, begin to lay the brick pattern. Ensure that you mark guidelines with chalk to stay in a straight line. And don’t forget to cover the floor with a tarp.

Attaching the Brick Veneer

Remember that drywall is flammable. Therefore, it’s inappropriate for a fireplace with brick veneer. You can, however, install in warm areas of the house, like near the heat register. The adhesive you choose depends on the area’s temperature.

For a room with normal temperature conditions, mastic sealant is perfect. Apply a thin layer with a masonry towel and tightly push the brick veneer pieces into their place according to the layout. Don’t forget to leave some space to fill grout or mortar later.

Mortar Applications

Unlike an original brick wall, it’s best if you seal your veneer wall with mortar. You can easily do this with a roller. If you don’t do this, the veneer will leak, especially in areas like your bathroom and kitchen.

It takes three days for brick installation to dry. Once it’s set, add the mortar in between the spaces and wait for another three days for its to dry. After that, your brick veneer wall will be ready!

If you’re one of those adventurous homeowners who love to do everything on their own, you’ll have fun installing the brick veneer. But we doubt that you’ll have the kind of precision that’s needed for a flawless faux wall. Hiring a team of professionals will be the best option.
